What is the significance of faith or having faith in a religion?

How does faith play a role in religion? Does religion exist without faith? What more is needed besides faith? Can faith and proof co-exist?

faith is used to stop people from asking questions
they know it doesnt make sense, but all they have to say is if you dont believe it you will burn for eternity
i.e. where faith comes into the picture
the more you question it, the less you believe it
