The Christian and Politics (John MacArthur)

December 20th, 2011

www.gty.org How should you react when your government doesn’t honor God? Is it worth your time to contact legislators to express your concerns about a proposed law or an unjust tax? And should the workings of government be much of a concern to you at all? Aren’t we all better off leaving political matters up to others, focusing instead on obeying God’s Word and proclaiming the gospel? Romans 13 can help you get a handle on those important questions.

    • How much should we dual citizens (of heaven and the USA), do our civic duty to defend our constitution, and the principles of liberty, rights bestowed to us by our Creator (as our founding documents declare,) in the political realm. When do we step in, beyond prayer, when our government goes lawless (defying the constitution), socialist (taking our private property and hard earned income for causes we don’t consent to) or fascist (imprisoning dissenters)?

    • Jesus was not mealy mouthed – he spoke clearly about many of todays political issues. The kingdom of God. Do you believe the lives lost in abortion were meant to be leaders for God? … No bearing on eternity?! Slaughtering babies all the way up to 9months in the womb – did God not say “I knew you before you were born”. this is such a wishy washy – God will spew you out of his mouth – you are neither hot nor cold but politically correct.

    • Jesus was not mealy mouthed. He argued with the pharisees. He was not a whimp when it came to spreading the gospel and declaring the unrighteous. God’s word says No impact! No bearing on eternity? You are neither cold nor hot and will be spewed out of his mouth. Politics is all through his word. I knew you before you were born & yet our president voted for the slaughtering of babies in the womb the whole term of pregnancy. more to come

    • What about William Wilberforce?

    • “Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.” (Romans 13:1-2)

    • So the answer to when we should step in would be when the Bible isn’t true anymore. The U.S. government has failed only because the church has fist failed. The constitution doesn’t keep you free, God does.

    • As a russian american i respect John McArtur the most in that and he has shown many times in years of my listening his messages on radio phones. Everyone has seen to what kind of disaster “american christianity” with “born again” president Bush brought the country and the whole world. There are a whole bunch of gullible fake christians outhere , that lost their first priority and love to a human being. Tight up themselves in yokes with paranoid war monger neocons and corporate thieves .

    • Any pastore in my opinion, should focuse on spreading the true biblical Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. John make that clear and i agree. pastor’s ought not to step out of boundary. Leave the judgement to God and God alone. We need to voice out when dealing with spiritual battle of good & evil. I don’t like politic. Just hope, I vote in the right person that the Lord desire for me to vote….

    • what if there is no righteous man to vote for in politics?

    • The problem is, Christians have consistently voted for so called “christian candidates” that have destroyed out country through wars, debt, etc… A Candidate will of course run on that platform to obtain more votes. By the way, Hitler called himself a believer as well.

    • Jesus’ existence is nothing more than hearsay. What evidence is there? The Bible? WOW! A book that declares itself as truth. Pretty weak argument!

Was Jesus a scholar, a teacher? Why did he NEVER write anything Himself? Was He illiterate? Why did NOBODY who ever met Jesus write anything about those extraordinary events down as they happened? There is no eye witness testimony by ANYBODY who encountered this Jesus, the OLDEST “witness” texts written 40+ years AFTER Crucifiction!

    • Plain and simple. Either you believe or you don’t. It’s your choice. People who believe in the Bible believe its true. People who believe in their our knowledge can believe that the Bible is false. The Bible teaches about that ratio between believes and non-believes is very big. It teaches there are millions upon millions who don’t believe. And that there are only a few who do. What more is there to be said?

    • Incredible

    • @multitalentino I would ask you the question, do you believe in Socrates? You would never doubt him would you? And yet he didn’t wirte anything, was he illeterate? A lot of people did write about the events of Jesus, read the Bible, or the writings of Josephus. The gospel writers got their information from eyewitnesses i.e Mark from Peter. So if you would like to try again i would be happy to once again render your comments false

    • @multitalentino as a matter or fact the gospels are all eyewitness accounts of the things Jesus did. The bible has withstood the test of scrutiny. God protects his word and the bible is unaltered and unchanged for over a thousand years if god wanted something out he would have gotten rid of it.

    • I don’t think the church should take on politics as a mission; it should stick to the Gospel. However… If Rob Bell and the like are to be called out as wolves, then why can’t we call out the politicians that say (for example) they are against abortion and such but do the opposite when they get there as wolves? They are asking for the vote of Christians. And, it’s not just a vote, but they’re asking to follow them.
